Project outline

Built in just 8 months, the pedestrian tunnel is an important element of Warsaw's public transport infrastructure as it constitutes a connection among the metro line, the tram platforms, and the bus terminus. Because the facility was to be located in the very centre of the capital, the whole project was divided into stages.

The primary criterion was to minimise disruption to road and tram traffic. Consequently, the foundation works were coordinated with traffic organisation in order to prevent the latter's total stoppage. With respect to the technical aspects, it was very important to position the tunnel just 80 cm above the floor slabs of the other facilities, e.g. the eastern metro tunnel. The structure of the pedestrian tunnel comprises a slab-column frame system, an 80 cm ceiling supported on a piled wall and internal columns. The main weight of the facility rests on 13 columns with the diameter of 1800 m, reaching the thickness of up to 37 m, and a wall consisting of 211 piles with the diameter of 620 mm, constituting the outline of the structure.

Greatest challenges

Carrying out construction works without complete traffic closure in the vicinity of the construction site.

Key moment

Performing specialist piling works.
